Downward Dog your way to Heart and Thyroid Health

Last year I finally convinced my husband to try yoga with me.
While I wasn't a regular, I loved it and knew he would too.
As we sat up from Savasana at the end of class, I eagerly looked over and asked him how he liked it.
"It's just a bunch of breathing and stretching" he said, looking a bit confused.
"But how do you feel?" I asked.
"Good" he replied with a shrug.
While I may have been expecting rainbows and fireworks, I was happy with good because it meant he would be a willing participant for future date nights (nothing like yoga followed by dinner and a drink to get conversation flowing!).
It is this moment that always comes to mind when new research comes out about the benefits of yoga.
Really, it is just a bunch of breathing and stretching, but these two simple things have such a hugely beneficial effect on our health.
Like this new study, which links practicing yoga 4 times a week to a significant decrease in total cholesterol, LDL levels and triglycerides with an improvement in HDL levels.
And while this study set out to see the effects of yoga on TSH levels, there was indication that regular yoga may help reduce the amount of thyroid medication required, although more research is needed.
Either way, once again yoga proves that a little bit of breathing and stretching can truly work wonders, for our hearts and our thyroids.
